Active crossover

An active filter is a circuit built around an operational amplifier itself usually consists of several bipolar transistors or field effect. It performs filtering and amplification of the signal passing through it. Unlike its passive counterpart, the active filter can optionally have a voltage gain greater than one.

In addition, it has the advantage of being more reliable (the entire production process is automated), less expensive (when produced in large quantities), more compact (the parasites- elements resistors, capacitors, inductances- are thus lessened) and therefore integrated within an integrated circuit. Nevertheless we recognize the active filter several disadvantages like bad behavior at high frequencies (reduction of bandwidth, which tends to limit its use to audio applications), high sensitivity with accuracy the value of the components (that departs usually of the face value of at least 10%), the need for additional power source and limiting the amplitude of signals in the order of the Volt.

Moreover, the operational amplifiers generate noise. Historically, the first discrete filters ROE (+ RC circuit operational amplifier) appeared in the mid sixties. It should nevertheless expect the seventies, with the first commercial integrated circuit (HIC and DIP) to be revealed the economic interest of this type of filter.
